Avian Influenza
What it is
Influenza A viruses that infect birds. Some strains are highly pathogenic (HPAI).
How it spreads
Spread through respiratory secretions, droppings, contaminated equipment, and wild bird contact.
Why it matters
HPAI strains can cause high mortality and have public health and trade implications.
Common signs or symptoms
- Sudden death
- Respiratory signs
- Neurological signs
- Drop in activity
Testing and diagnosis
PCR through veterinary or state laboratories.
What to do if exposure is suspected
Isolate immediately, avoid contact with wild birds, and contact your state veterinarian.
Quarantine considerations
Strict biosecurity; do not move birds suspected of HPAI.
When to contact an avian veterinarian
Immediately on suspicion.

Avian influenza is reportable. Contact your state Department of Agriculture or USDA APHIS.
