PBFD — Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease

What it is

PBFD is a viral disease caused by Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV) that affects feather development, beak structure, and the immune system in psittacine birds.

How it spreads

The virus is shed in feather dust, droppings, and crop secretions, and can persist in the environment for long periods.

Why it matters

PBFD is contagious, often chronic, and currently has no cure. It can be devastating to aviaries and rescues.

Common signs or symptoms

  • Progressive feather loss or abnormal feathers
  • Beak deformities or lesions
  • Immune suppression and secondary infections

Testing and diagnosis

PCR testing of blood or feather samples is the most common diagnostic approach.

What to do if exposure is suspected

Isolate the bird, contact an avian veterinarian, and consider testing exposed birds.

Quarantine considerations

Strict quarantine of at least 90 days is commonly recommended for newly introduced birds.

When to contact an avian veterinarian

Contact an avian veterinarian immediately if you suspect PBFD.

When to contact animal health authorities

Report clusters or rescue/store-related outbreaks to local animal health officials.

This information is educational and does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment. If your bird may have been exposed to a contagious disease, contact an avian veterinarian as soon as possible.
