Avian Polyomavirus
What it is
A viral disease most dangerous to young, unweaned psittacines.
How it spreads
Spread through feather dust, droppings, and crop secretions.
Why it matters
Often fatal in nestlings; adults may be carriers.
Common signs or symptoms
- Sudden death of nestlings
- Abdominal distention
- Bleeding under the skin
- Feather abnormalities in survivors
Testing and diagnosis
PCR of blood, cloacal swabs, or tissue.
What to do if exposure is suspected
Isolate, disinfect, and consult an avian vet — especially in breeding settings.
Quarantine considerations
Aggressive sanitation; quarantine new birds and test before introducing to nurseries.
When to contact an avian veterinarian
Immediately, especially for nestling deaths.
When to contact animal health authorities
Report unusual nursery losses or outbreaks.
