Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci)
What it is
Psittacosis is a bacterial disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci. It can infect birds and humans (zoonotic).
How it spreads
Spread through inhalation of dried droppings, feather dust, and respiratory secretions.
Why it matters
Because it is zoonotic, psittacosis is a public health concern as well as a flock health concern.
Common signs or symptoms
- Respiratory symptoms
- Lethargy
- Green/yellow droppings
- Weight loss
- Eye or nasal discharge
Testing and diagnosis
PCR of swabs (choanal, cloacal) or blood.
What to do if exposure is suspected
Wear PPE, isolate the bird, and contact an avian veterinarian and your physician if you have respiratory symptoms.
Quarantine considerations
Treatment typically involves doxycycline for several weeks under veterinary supervision.
When to contact an avian veterinarian
Contact an avian veterinarian as soon as symptoms appear.
When to contact animal health authorities
Psittacosis is reportable in many jurisdictions — contact your state Department of Health/Agriculture.
